Will Invisible Fence® work on any pet?
Yes! Dogs and cats of all sizes, breeds, ages, and temperaments have successfully been trained on Invisible Fence®.
Is static correction humane for pets?
Yes. While the correction may be uncomfortable and startling to your pet, it will not hurt them. Many pets only feel the correction once or twice and don't challenge the system afterwards.
It is important to note that we have thousands of different customizable corrections and the correction used is based on the personality of your pet, not the size or breed. The static correction is similar to the sensation you feel when you run your hand across a TV screen or when you walk across a carpet and touch a metal doorknob. The sensation momentarily surprises you and gets your attention.

How does the Invisible Fence® underground dog fence work?
First, a wire is installed around the perimeter of your property, establishing your pet's Invisible Boundary® perimeter. A transmitter, usually placed in your basement or garage, sends a radio signal along the wire. The radio signal is picked up by your pet's collar which emits a warning sound when your pet approaches the Invisible Boundary.
Proper training is critical to ensure that your pet understands and stays within the established boundaries. That is why we create our Perfect Start Plus Training Program. During the training process, your professional certified Pet Trainer will introduce the customized static correction to your pet which reinforces the boundaries of your property and tells your pet clearly where they can and cannot go.
Do Invisible Fence® systems work for cats?
Yes! Cats can be successfully trained to use the Invisible Fence® system, both outdoors and indoors.
Are Invisible Fence® systems safe for pregnant or nursing cats/dogs?
Yes, your Invisible Fence® solution is completely safe to use with pregnant and nursing pets. In 51 years we have found no evidence that suggests an Invisible Fence® system produces detrimental effects for a pregnant pet. We have had veterinary reports of many pregnant pets, pets in season, and pets conceiving while on the Invisible Fence® system. In the best interest of the pet, we will always advise that each owner check with their veterinarian if they have concerns regarding containment.
Training Questions
Can I still walk my dog once I have an Invisible Fence® system?
We encourage families to wait until their pets are successfully contained for 2-3 weeks before starting the exit ritual. Following this ritual will make learning to leave for a walk a very easy process for both the pet and the family. If you are unable to wait until the dog is ready for the exit ritual, be sure to talk with your trainer to determine the best alternative.
- Pick a word to give the dog permission to cross the line.
- Words like ‘gate’, ‘bridge’, ‘shazam’, etc.
- Avoid words like “ok” as it comes up in normal conversation too often.
- The word you pick should be used just for crossing the fence line.
- Pick a spot to leave the yard. One consistent spot is best.
- Quietly take the dog’s collar off in the house. Then, make a big fuss about putting on his walking gear.
- The focus is on getting the walking gear, not taking off the collar.
- Walk out to “the spot” and have the dog sit at the edge of his comfort zone. Make a big deal about moving the flag out of the way. Set it down somewhere away from the exit point. This “opens” the gate.
- Using the exit word, have the dog cross the fence line and go for a walk.
- When you return, confidently walk back into the yard and have the dog stop inside the fence line. Make a big deal about replacing the flag. This “closes” the gate.
- Always return to the house to take off walking gear and quietly put the collar back on.
- Over time, the last flag to go away is the GATE Flag.
- Eventually just the Open and Close motion signals to the dog when he can leave the yard and when the gate is closed. Remember dogs are very aware of body language and the “open” and “close” motion can be very powerful.
What animals can be trained to use an Invisible Fence® system?
The Invisible Fence® Brand pet containment system is recommended for dogs and cats, but has been used on other animals such as goats, sheep, donkeys, cows, and pigs – animals that react favorably to conditioning. However, Invisible Fence® products are intended for domestic dogs and cats and we have only developed training protocols for these pets.
Installation Questions
Does Invisible Fence® work with a traditional fence?
Yes! Invisible Fence® system boundary wire can be installed along an existing fence for reinforcement from digging, jumping, or getting out of an open gate. Our certified training professionals can aid you in the design of your system.
Can Invisible Fence® be installed through water?
Yes, our certified technicians can install the Invisible Fence® boundary wire through lakes, streams or creeks to keep your pet away from the water, or only allowing them to enter the shallow sections.
How does the Invisible Fence® installation work across my driveway?
Depending on the type of driveway you have (concrete, asphalt, gravel, brick), the method changes. Our certified technicians have experience installing wire across all driveway surfaces.

How long does the Invisible Fence® wire last?
Invisible Fence® Brand boundary wire is a direct burial grade wire and has a life expectancy of 27 years left undisturbed in the ground.
How much power does the Invisible Fence® outdoor system use?
Similar to a 5-watt night light, about $10 per year.
Will a power failure affect my Invisible Fence® system?
When the power is out, your Invisible Fence® Brand system will continue to operate with the optional battery back-up. If the power outage lasts an hour or more, consider alternate methods of containment.
Will the Invisible Fence® system create any interference in my home?
No. Invisible Fence® Brand solutions are backed by more than 51 years of technological development. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations state we cannot, and do not create distortion on other communication systems ie: cable, satellite, high speed internet, DSL, cellular phones, GPS, pacemakers, etc.
Are Invisible Fence® products compliant?
- RoHS - All Invisible Fence® Brand products comply with RoHS 2 directives.
- CE - All Invisible Fence® Brand products sold within the European Economic Area (EEA) are CE compliant and bare the CE mark.

Can I use Invisible Fence® indoor systems for my cat?

Does Invisible Fence® work for cats?
Yes! Cats can be successfully trained to use the Invisible Fence® system, both outdoors and indoors. Our featherweight collar receiver is the smallest and most advanced collar available. Weighing in at just one ounce, it is worn comfortably by cats.

Does Invisible Fence® work inside?
Yes! Our Shields Avoidance Solutions work with the same Invisible Fence collar receiver that your pet wears outdoors. The Shields indoor solution is a small, wireless 5-inch disc that can be placed anywhere that you’d like to keep your pet away from. The boundary zone can be set from 2' in diameter up to 12'.
Can I use the Invisible Fence® indoor system to separate pets?
Yes! Invisible Fence is the perfect solution for multi-pet homes. When used in conjunction with Boundary Plus® Systems, the Shields Indoor Solutions can be customized for multiple pets. You can keep one pet outside while allowing another to enter, you can separate food bowls, or you can even keep a certain pet off the couch – the options are endless.

How many dogs/cats can use my Invisible Fence® system?
Invisible Fence® solutions are perfect for multi-pet homes. You can place multiple pets on the same Invisible Fence® Brand system. However, each pet needs to wear their own customized Computer Collar Receiver and be trained separately since each pet is an individual with different personalities and temperaments. Our certified Perfect Start Plus Trainers will work with you and your pets to be sure all pets are trained successfully.

Can my pet run through and escape Invisible Fence®?
Not all electronic fences are created the same. Some brands, especially store-bought systems, do not come with professional training which can lead to a higher rate of pets getting through the system. Invisible Fence® Brand is the original innovator of the electric pet fence with professional, customized training and more than 45 years of experience!
The rare incidence of a pet crossing through an actual Invisible Fence boundary can usually be attributed to one of three factors:
- Drained batteries. Drained batteries are easily preventable by ensuring the Power Cap battery is changed every 3 months. We even offer battery delivery plans so you have one less thing to think about.
- Pets not wearing the Computer Collar unit. The Computer Collar unit should be worn every time the pet is outdoors.
- Wire breaks. Wire breaks are rare but can occur when homeowners are digging near the wire with a shovel, irrigating their lawn, rodent chewing, etc. Should a wire break occur we recommend contacting us immediately to have the boundary wire fixed. In the meantime, the pet should be kept safe by using another method of containment.
Is Invisible Fence® waterproof?
Yes, with an Invisible Fence® Brand Power Cap battery in place, both the Invisible Fence® GPS Collar and other system units are waterproof. If the collar strap becomes wet, it is recommended that it be removed from your pet and be allowed to air dry before replacing the collar on your pet’s neck.

Troubleshooting Tips
Why is my collar blinking red?
If you have started to see a red flashing light on your pet’s Computer Collar unit, your Power Cap battery may need to be replaced. You can order replacement batteries online, from your local dealer, or by calling (800) 578-3647.
Why is my control panel beeping?
If your Invisible Fence® control panel is beeping every second, the most likely issue is that you have a wire break somewhere on your property. These can be caused by digging too deep when working in the yard, burrowing animals, and even the weather. The most important thing to know is that your fence will NOT contain your pets when there is a wire break, so you should not let your pets outside until the issue is resolved. If your Invisible Fence® control panel is beeping with a lengthy pause between each beep, it’s possible your backup battery unit needs to be replaced. Your fence will still work, but if your power goes out, the system will no longer be operational until power is restored. The transmitter in my basement/garage is beeping. What's wrong?
It’s possible you have a wire break or multiple breaks. Request a service appointment online by clicking here, or call us at (800) 578-3647. At your service appointment, our Certified Technician will test your entire system including the control panel, lightning and surge protection, Computer Collar receiver, and underground wire. We will provide a complete system analysis, make any necessary repairs, and reintroduce your pet to the Invisible Fence system.
My pet's collar doesn't activate at the boundary. What is wrong?
Ensure that your pet’s Computer Collar receiver is fitted properly to his neck. The collar should be snug enough to slide only one finger between a correction post and your pet’s skin. Remember to adjust the fit of the collar as your pet’s coat, weight, and age change. Your pet’s coat may change from season to season.
Make sure you’re testing the collar at the same height level as your pet. If you’re holding the collar at your waist and you have a small dog or cat, you may not hear the tone or feel the correction because you’re above the signal field. If you have a Boundary Plus® system, you’ll also want to make sure you walk through the boundary, as the correction does not occur until your pet leaves the yard.

My pet passed away. Can I use the same collar on a new pet?
Yes, however the Computer Collar® receiver should be re-programmed by one of our Professional Pet Trainers so that the correction level is just right (not too high or too low) for your new pet. We also recommend scheduling a training session(s) to teach your new pet the boundaries of their Invisible Fence® system. Power Cap Battery Questions
How do I replace the battery in my Invisible Fence Computer Collar?
- Use a small, thin coin to remove the Power Cap battery from the Computer Collar unit. Insert the coin in the slot on top of the Power Cap unit and turn it 45 degrees counter-clockwise. Do not push down while turning. The Power Cap unit will rotate while the spring inside will push the Power Cap battery out of the Computer Collar unit battery chamber.
- Install a new Power Cap battery by lining up the lugs on the bottom of the Power Cap unit with the grooves in the sides of the receiver’s battery chamber. Make sure the metal tabs on the bottom of the Power Cap unit are not bent. Place the Power Cap battery into the chamber while gently, but firmly, turning it clockwise 45 degrees with your fingers.
How often should I replace the battery in my Invisible Fence Computer Collar?
We recommend changing the battery every 3 months - it’s the safest, easiest and most reliable way to guarantee your pet’s safety 100% of the time.

Computer Collar Receiver Questions
How do I change the collar strap for my Invisible Fence® collar?
When changing the nylon strap that your collar attaches to, it is important to use the right tool. Any time you need to remove the computer portion, a 5/16 nut driver should be used. This tool is made to fit correctly over the posts for safe removal and tightening. To remove/unscrew the posts, turn them counterclockwise. To replace the posts, turn them clockwise. Tighten the posts only until you feel resistance to avoid over tightening and damage.
How tight should my pet’s Invisible Fence® collar be around their neck?
The Invisible Fence® Brand collar should be snug enough to slide only one finger between a correction post and your pet’s skin. Remember to adjust the fit of the collar as your pet’s coat, weight, and age change. Your pet’s coat may change from season to season.
Is Invisible Fence® waterproof?
Yes, with an Invisible Fence® Brand Power Cap battery in place, the collar is waterproof and can be submersed in water up to 10 feet. If the nylon collar strap becomes wet, it is recommended that it be removed from your pet and be allowed to air dry before replacing the collar on your pet’s neck.
What is the size of the Invisible Fence® MicroLite Computer Collar?
Our MicroLite Computer Collar unit is so small it only weighs 1 ounce! Measurements are approximately 1.75" wide x 1" tall x 1" deep.
Should I remove the Invisible Fence® Computer Collar from my dog’s/cat’s neck periodically?
Yes. It is very important to evaluate or remove the collar nightly. Because pets grow and change in size, it is important that you take the time to remove, check or adjust the collar. Check the fit of your pet’s collar to make sure that it fits snugly, but not too tightly, and is not causing any irritation. The best way to test the fit of the collar: you should be able to fit one finger between the correction post and the skin on your pet’s neck. Neck irritation may develop if the collar is too tight, but is most likely to take place (1) during warm, wet weather conditions (2) with thick-coated dogs (3) during shedding season or (4) any time the Computer Collar unit is left on for long periods of time. Failure to check ANY collar will result in skin irritation or pressure necrosis. These are not burns (since Invisible Fence® Brand uses static correction) but instead the result of skin irritation and not checking for the proper fitting of the collar.
